Quick answer

What is the Character Backstory Generator?

A character backstory generator: one line in, a card out with want, wound, secret, voice, backstory and an image prompt. Copy it or download it.

How it works

  1. 01

    Describe your character

One line is enough: who they are and where they live. Anything you give, a job, a trait, a place, stays in the card.

  2. 02

Choose the role, genre and tone

A hero, villain, sidekick or mentor. A genre if you want one. A grounded, dark, warm or funny tone.

  3. 03

Copy it or take it further

Copy the card, download it as a Markdown character sheet, copy the image prompt, or turn the character into a character sheet in Ziztu.

What you get

A character you can film

Every part is something a camera or a microphone can show: a want you can see them chase, a voice you can hear, an object they carry, a past told as scenes.

Built on want, wound, lie and secret

The wound explains the lie, the lie shapes the want, and the secret is what the story can break. They fit together, so the card is a plot engine and not a list of traits.

Ready for the next step

The card ends with an image prompt for a portrait, and one button takes the character into Ziztu. Every run shows its price in credits first.

Who it's for

  • Screenwriters and novelists

Get past the blank page for a lead or a villain, then change whatever does not fit your story.

  • Game masters and role players

Write a fantasy character with a past that gives the table something to pull on. Put the class or the race in your line and it is kept.

  • Creators of series and micro dramas

Build the cast of an episode: one card per person, each with a voice and a look that stay the same in every scene.

What the example shows

The first example above is a real result of this tool for one line: a ferry mechanic who has never left her harbor town. Nothing was edited after it came back.

Read the card from the top: she wants one thing she can film (to get the old ferry through winter), the wound is a scene with a place and a year, the lie is something she would say out loud, and the secret is a fact that would hurt someone she loves. Press the other examples to see a mentor, a villain and a sidekick built the same way.

What is on a character card

  • Want. What they chase in the story, in a sentence you can film.
  • Wound. The one event in their past that still shapes them, with a place and a time.
  • Lie. The false belief that came from the wound, written as they would say it.
  • Secret. A fact they hide, and who it would hurt.
  • Voice and look. How they talk, one line they would say, three visible traits and an object they always carry.
  • Backstory. Three short parts: before the wound, the wound, and how it shows today.
  • Traits. Five, including a flaw and one that contradicts it.

How to write a character backstory that changes the story

A backstory is useful when it creates pressure in the present. Facts about a childhood do nothing unless they explain a choice the character makes on the page. Start from the want and ask what happened to make them want it so badly. That event is the wound.

Then ask what the character decided to believe because of it. That belief is the lie, and the story is the process of it being tested. Last, give them something to hide. A secret turns every scene with another person into a risk, which is what makes dialogue worth writing. If a detail does not change what the character does, cut it.

From a character to a film

Take the character into Ziztu: it opens with your character as the idea, draws a character sheet and keeps the same face in every shot.

Start with this character

The card says how your character talks; hear one of their lines with text to anime voice before you cast or record it. To write a scene for them, use the AI script writer or the AI dialogue generator. To find the sentence that sells the story they are in, use the logline generator. To design an original character from a picture-first idea, try the OC maker.

Frequently asked questions

Is this character backstory generator free?

Not free, but cheap. Every run uses a few credits, shown before you start, and you need to be signed in. Longer work in the AI Script Writer is priced in credits too. Start for $7 a month.

What is a character backstory?

A backstory is the history that explains who a character is when the story starts. The useful part is the one event that still shapes them, what they decided to believe because of it, and what they now hide or chase.

How do I write a good character backstory?

Start with what the character wants, then find the event that made them want it. Add the belief that came from that event and one secret. Keep only the details that change what they do in the story, and show the past as scenes, not a summary.

Can it write a D&D character backstory?

Yes. Choose Fantasy, and put the class, the race or the party role in your line (a dwarf cleric who left her temple, for example). Those facts are kept. Check the result against your game master's setting.

Does it make a character personality or a list of traits?

It gives five traits, including a flaw and one that contradicts it, but the card is more than a list: it adds a want, a wound, a lie, a secret and a voice, which is what makes a personality play on screen.

Can I use the character in my own book, script or game?

Yes, once you have made it your own. Change names and details that do not fit, and read it aloud. AI text can resemble existing work, so check it before you publish it.

What is the image prompt for?

It is a short description of your character standing in a place that shows their life. Paste it into any image tool, or press Draw this character to open the free anime image creator with it filled in.

Every run shows its price in credits before you start.
