How it works

  1. 01

    Write your idea

A line or two is enough: who the story follows and what happens to them. Facts you give stay in every version.

  2. 02

    Say what it is

A feature film, a short film or a TV series, and a genre if you want one.

  3. 03

    Compare five loglines

Copy the ones you like, pick one, and take it to the AI Script Writer to start the script.

What you get

Five different versions

Not one plot said five ways. Each logline takes the idea in another direction and opens the sentence another way, so you can compare.

Why each one works

A short note under each logline says what that version offers that the others do not, so you can choose with a reason.

Free to try

3 sets of loglines a day with no account, 20 with a free one. Take your favorite into the AI Script Writer when you are ready.

Who it's for

  • Writers pitching a script

Find the sentence that makes a reader ask for the script, for a query letter, a pitch meeting or a contest entry.

  • Writers stuck on their premise

Writing the logline shows whether the story has a clear want and a clear obstacle. If five versions all feel flat, the idea needs work.

  • Students and teachers

See five ways to say the same idea and discuss which one sells it best.

What the example shows

The example above is a real result of this tool, written from the idea in the box. Nothing was edited after it came back.

The same starting idea gives a courtroom thriller, a dark comedy, a high-concept pitch, a moral drama and a redemption story. They are different films, and that is the point: the logline you choose decides which one you write.

What a good logline has

A logline is one sentence that tells a reader what the story is and why it is worth reading. Most good ones hold five things:

  • A specific protagonist. A role plus a trait that shows a flaw: "a disgraced chef", not "a man".
  • An inciting event. The thing that happens to start the story.
  • A goal. What the protagonist tries to get or stop.
  • An opposing force. What stands in the way, ideally something particular rather than "a powerful corporation".
  • The stakes. What is lost if they fail.

It usually runs from 25 to 40 words, names nobody, and does not ask a question or end on a tagline. It reads like a film that exists.

How to choose between the five

  • Pick the one you want to read. If you saw it on a poster, which would you watch?
  • Check the want and the obstacle. You should be able to say what the main character is trying to do and what is in the way in a few words.
  • Tell it to someone. Say it out loud to a person who does not know the story. If they ask a question about the story, it is working.
  • Mix the parts. It is fine to take the protagonist from one version and the stakes from another. The generator is a draft, and the final sentence is yours.

From a logline to a script

Take the logline you picked into the AI Script Writer: it opens as the start of a script in a studio project.

Frequently asked questions

Is this logline generator free?

Yes. You can write 3 sets of loglines a day without an account and 20 a day with a free one. Longer work in the AI Script Writer is priced in credits, and the price shows before you run it. New accounts also get 40 free trial credits to try the rest of Ziztu.

What is a logline?

A logline is a one-sentence summary of a film, show or book that gives the protagonist, the problem and the stakes. Producers, agents and readers use it to decide whether to ask for more.

How long should a logline be?

One sentence, usually 25 to 40 words. Shorter is hard to make specific and longer starts to read like a synopsis. This generator keeps each logline under 40 words.

Why does it write five different versions?

Because the same idea can be told as a thriller, a comedy or a drama, and the version you choose shapes the script. Each one opens the sentence in a different way: the classic order, the irony, the high concept, the stakes and the flaw.

Does it work for TV series and short films?

Yes. Choose TV series or Short film and the loglines are written for that kind of story. For a series, a logline describes the premise that can run for many episodes.

Can I use these loglines in a pitch or a query letter?

Yes, once you have made them your own. Keep the facts that are true to your story, tighten the wording and read it aloud. AI text can resemble existing work, so check it before you send it anywhere.

What is the difference between a logline, a tagline and a synopsis?

A logline sells the story in one sentence for the people who make films. A tagline is a short slogan for an audience, such as the line on a poster. A synopsis is a page or more that tells the whole story, including the ending.
