The prompt that made it
A live-action vertical micro drama, episode 1: on her wedding day a bride reads a message on the groom's phone and walks down the aisle anyway, smiling. End on a cliffhanger when she takes the microphone.

A bride reads a message in the chapel doorway and smiles.

A woman in a yellow raincoat sees the same man behind her again.

How to turn a novel chapter into a micro drama in 5 steps

Step 1. Pick the one scene that turns the chapter

A chapter holds many scenes, and a micro drama episode holds one or two. Find the moment where something changes for the main character: a secret out, a choice made, a door opened. That is your episode. The rest becomes the recap in one line.

Costs
Nothing. This step is on paper.

Step 2. Cut what a camera cannot show

A novel says what a character thinks. A camera only shows what they do and say. Turn each thought into an action or a line. "She knew he was lying" becomes a glance at his hands and the line "You were home all night?". Keep every line short.

Step 3. Put it in a script

Write the scene in the AI Script Writer, or import it as a Fountain, Final Draft or plain text file. A script is the format Ziztu turns into shots. If you only have a summary, the Script Writer takes an idea of up to 800 characters and drafts the scenes from it.

Accepts
Fountain, Final Draft (.fdx) and plain text, up to 8 MB

Step 4. Turn the scene into shots with Script to film

Script to film breaks each scene into shots with a size, an angle, a lens and a camera move, and keeps your dialogue word for word. You approve the plan before anything is made. It plans up to 6 scenes in one run, so a chapter adapted to one or two scenes fits in a single run.

Maya, a bride with auburn hair in an ivory gown and a short veil, walks down the aisle of a sunlit stone chapel holding white roses
Shot 1, a wide tracking shot: Maya walks the aisle.

Step 5. Make the cast, then the clips

Approving the plan adds the characters and places to your project and starts their sheets. Then generate each shot as a vertical 9:16 clip: $0.37 for 5 seconds at 480p, $0.60 at 768p on Starter.

Maya and Daniel stand under a flower arch in golden light, she looks up at him, he wears a grey three-piece suit
Shot 3, a medium push-in: the same Maya, the same Daniel.

A worked example: one beat, seven shots

The Wrong Wedding is the size of one adapted beat: a bride, a message she read, and one line that changes the room. Written as a novel, the chapter might spend a page on her thoughts. As a micro drama it is seven shots and four lines, 32 seconds in all. Here is how four sentences of prose become four shots.

From the page to the screen
On the pageOn the screen
Maya had read his messages that morning and had decided to say nothing until the vows.Shot 3: she leans in and whispers "I read your messages this morning."
Daniel felt the floor drop out from under him.Shot 4: a medium close-up, he freezes, and says "Maya... let me explain."
The whole chapel held its breath.Shot 5: she takes the microphone and says "Everyone, a small change of plans."
A stranger had come in late, and nobody had seen her face.Shots 6 and 7: the doors swing open, a woman in red stands in the light, her face hidden.

Priced from the rate card at 768P, all seven clips of the episode come to 320 credits, about $3.84 on Starter, before pictures, voices, music and retakes.

Mistakes that cost credits

  • Adapting the whole chapter. A chapter of 4,000 words is far more than one episode. Pick one scene and keep the rest as a one-line recap.
  • Keeping the inner monologue. A thought on the page needs a picture or a line on screen. If you cannot find one, cut it.
  • Long paragraphs of dialogue. Break each speech into short lines with a reaction between them. Short lines are easier for a clip to speak.
  • Too many names. A novel can introduce six characters in a chapter. A 60 second episode needs two or three.
  • Adapting a book you do not have rights to. Use your own writing or a book in the public domain. Ziztu cannot give you the rights to someone else's story.

Why Ziztu for this job

  • Ziztu turns one idea into a whole micro drama or anime episode, with the same characters in every shot.
  • A Director plans the cast, the scenes and every shot first, and the price of each generation is shown before you spend any credits.
  • Micro dramas and anime are made in one place, on one credit balance, with voices, music and captions on one timeline.
  • Script to film keeps your lines word for word and turns each scene into a plan of shots you approve before any credits are spent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn a novel into a micro drama?

Yes, one scene at a time. A micro drama episode runs one to three minutes, so pick the scene that turns the chapter, rewrite it as short lines and actions, and turn that script into shots.

Can I paste a whole chapter into Ziztu?

You can import text as a script, but a whole chapter is too long for one episode, and a novel is written in thoughts, not shots. Rewrite one scene as lines and actions first.

How long should the adapted scene be?

Aim for one to three pages of script, which is roughly one to three minutes of vertical video. A shorter scene, like the 32 second example, is a good first episode.

Do I need the rights to the book?

Yes. Adapt your own writing or a book in the public domain. Do not upload someone else's protected story.

What does it cost to adapt one scene?

The seven clips of the example cost 320 credits at 768P, about $3.84 on Starter, before pictures, voices, music and retakes. Every price is shown before you generate.
