Is Midjourney free?
No. Midjourney's help centre says no free trial is currently available in Discord or on midjourney.com. A limited trial is available in the niji journey app on iOS and Android. Every other route is a paid subscription, and all plans renew automatically unless you cancel.
The help centre also describes earning free Fast time by rating images, which is a small top-up on a paid plan, not a free tier. Images and videos you make can be used in almost any way once you have subscribed, even after you cancel. A company making more than $1,000,000 in gross revenue a year must buy Pro or Mega.
What Midjourney GPU time buys
Midjourney sells GPU time rather than credits. Fast time resets each month and does not carry over. Extra Fast time is $4 an hour. Midjourney's own figures for a Fast job are approximate: a standard prompt uses about 0.8 GPU minutes, an HD prompt about 1.3, and a batch of 4 SD videos about 8 minutes.

Prices use monthly billing. The big difference is Relax mode: on Standard, Pro and Mega, image prompts in Relax mode are unlimited, so they cost nothing extra but wait in a queue, which the page says can run from 0 to 30 minutes. Unlimited SD video in Relax is only on Pro and Mega.
Midjourney and Ziztu: cost per image
Midjourney counts a prompt, and a prompt can return more than one picture, so its figure is not exactly a price per image. Ziztu's side is its rate card, where one credit on the Starter plan ($12 for 1,000 credits) is $0.012.

Where the math favours Midjourney: volume. If you make hundreds of images a month, unlimited Relax mode from $30 a month is hard to beat, and a Fast prompt on Standard costs less than any image in the Ziztu rows above. Ziztu does not run Midjourney models.
