Why convert a GIF to a video?

A GIF is simple to share, but it is a heavy format for what it does. Each frame is stored as a separate picture, with no sound and only 256 colors. A video file stores the same movement in a much smaller space, and video editors, phones and players all know how to open it.

If you want to edit the GIF in a video editor, add music, or send it somewhere that wants a video file, turn it into an MP4 first. If you need to go the other way, use the video to GIF converter.

Make a short loop longer

Most GIFs are only a few seconds long. Choose to play the GIF several times and the MP4 repeats it, up to 10 times and 60 seconds in all. That turns a two second loop into a clip long enough to use as a background or an intro.

For something new instead of a repeat, turn a picture into a video with AI or make a clip from a line of text.

What happens to your GIF

Your GIF goes to our server over HTTPS and is turned into an MP4 there with ffmpeg. The GIF is deleted as soon as the MP4 is made, and the MP4 is deleted as soon as it has reached your screen. Anything left behind is deleted within 60 minutes. The limits are 50 MB per GIF and 10 conversions an hour.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a GIF to a video?

Use the tool on this page. Choose your GIF, pick how many times it should play, and press Make the MP4. The video appears with its size and you download it. It takes a few seconds, and there is no signup.

Is this GIF to MP4 converter free?

Yes. There is no account, no card and no sign-up step. You can make 10 MP4 files an hour.

Why turn a GIF into an MP4?

A GIF is a long list of pictures, and an MP4 is made to store moving pictures, so the MP4 is usually much smaller. In our own example, a 3 second GIF of 1.1 MB became a 6 second MP4 of 497 KB, with the GIF played twice. An MP4 also opens in video editors and players as a normal clip.

How do I make the video longer than the GIF?

Choose to play the GIF more than once. It can play up to 10 times, as long as the whole video stays under 60 seconds.

Will the MP4 have sound?

No. A GIF has no sound, so the MP4 is silent. Add music or a voice in a video editor afterwards.

What happens to a GIF with a see-through background?

An MP4 cannot be see-through, so the see-through parts are shown on white.

Does the picture get worse?

The MP4 keeps the picture size of the GIF and is made at high quality, so it looks very close to the original. Nothing is added to the picture, so a GIF that looks rough stays rough.

Is my GIF private?

Your GIF is uploaded over HTTPS to our server, turned into an MP4 with ffmpeg, and deleted as soon as the MP4 is made. The MP4 is deleted as soon as it reaches your screen. Anything left behind is deleted within 60 minutes. We do not keep or use your files.

Can I turn a video into a GIF?

Yes. The free video to GIF converter cuts any moment of a video into a looping GIF, with a size you choose.

Free, no account needed. Up to 10 conversions an hour. Your GIF is deleted as soon as the MP4 is made.
