Why one to two minutes

Wikipedia puts the micro drama episode at one to two minutes, in a series of 20 to 100 episodes. The length comes from the way the format is watched: on a phone, one tap at a time, with the next episode a swipe away. A short episode holds one hook, one turn and one question, so the viewer taps to see the answer. An episode that runs long needs more turns to keep that tap, which means more shots to plan, to keep the same and to review.

AI makes the short end easier. A 30 second episode is eight shots; a three minute one is forty-five. That is why a first episode of 30 to 60 seconds is the cheapest way to test an idea, and why a pilot or a finale is the place for two or three minutes.

The beats of a 90 second episode

The shape is the same at any length: a hook, a turn every twenty to thirty seconds and a last shot on the peak. At 90 seconds it looks like this:

  1. 0 to 3 sThe hook. Start on a peak: an insult, a slap, a flash of the payoff, a threat.
  2. 3 to 25 sThe setup, fast. Who she is, who is against her. End on the first turn.
  3. 25 to 55 sThe escalation. A reaction shot after every insult. A second turn, a new fact or an arrival.
  4. 55 to 80 sThe payoff. One win, large or small. The viewer should feel it.
  5. 80 to 90 sThe cliffhanger. A name, a door, a page. Cut on the peak, never after it.

For a 30 second episode keep the hook and the cliffhanger and give the middle one turn. For three minutes repeat the escalation once more. See how to write a micro drama cliffhanger.

The Wrong Wedding sits at the short end of the range. It fits a hook, a turn, a payoff and a cliffhanger into 7 shots:

  1. 0 to 5 sThe hook. Aisle procession. Wide, tracking.
  2. 5 to 10 sDaniel at the altar. Medium, static. "You look... perfect."
  3. 10 to 16 sThe turn. The quiet truth. Medium, push-in. "I read your messages this morning."
  4. 16 to 20 sDaniel freezes. Medium close-up, static. "Maya... let me explain."
  5. 20 to 25 sThe payoff. Taking the microphone. Medium, static. "Everyone, a small change of plans."
  6. 25 to 28 sDoors swing open. Wide, static.
  7. 28 to 32 sThe cliffhanger. The woman in red. Full, static.

How length changes the price

Ziztu prices video by the second, so a longer shot costs more in proportion and the number of shots does not change the price of a minute. At 768p a clip costs about 10 credits a second on Starter. What a longer episode changes is how many shots you have to plan, keep the same and review, which is the time you spend. A 5 second clip costs 50 credits ($0.60) at 768p and 31 credits ($0.37) at 480p.

Pick shorter shots when you want cuts and reactions, which is what makes a micro drama read fast. Our review of ten widely watched AI micro dramas in September 2026 found a middle shot length of about 2 seconds, with nearly half of the shots under 2.

Rules of thumb

  • Make episode 1 short. Thirty to sixty seconds. You learn what your cast and your style hold before you spend on a longer one.
  • Do not pad to reach a length. If the peak comes at 50 seconds, end at 55.
  • Keep the length steady across a series. Viewers expect the next episode to feel like the last one.
  • Use the first 3 seconds, not the last 3. A hook is worth more than an extra shot at the end.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a micro drama episode?

About one to two minutes, with 20 to 100 episodes in a series, according to Wikipedia. Episodes made with AI often run 30 seconds to three minutes. A shorter episode costs less to generate and gives you more chances to end on a hook.

How long should my first AI micro drama episode be?

Thirty to sixty seconds. It is enough for a hook, a turn and a cliffhanger, it costs a few dollars at list price and it shows you what your cast and style hold before you plan a longer one.

How many shots are in a 60 second micro drama?

About 15 shots of 4 seconds, or 12 shots of 5. Our review of ten widely watched AI micro dramas found a middle shot length of about 2 seconds, so many episodes use more and shorter shots.

How much does a 60 second AI micro drama cost?

At list price, 15 clips of 4 seconds cost 600 credits at 768P, about $7.20 on Starter, for the clips only. Voices, music, first frames and retakes are extra, and the price of each clip is shown before you generate it.

Can a micro drama episode be longer than two minutes?

Yes. Nothing stops a pilot or a finale from running two or three minutes. Longer episodes need more story turns, about one every 25 seconds, and more shots to keep consistent.

How long is the longest clip I can generate?

One shot in Ziztu can be up to 15 seconds. An episode is many shots cut together, so its length is the total of the shots.
