Micro Drama Genres
Micro dramas run on a few story engines. Wikipedia lists billionaire and CEO romance, revenge and identity reveals among the most popular. This guide compares eight you can make with AI: revenge, CEO romance, hidden heir, werewolf, mafia, second chance, contract marriage and billionaire romance, each with one promise and one kind of cliffhanger.

Eight micro drama genres: the promise, the engine and how hard each is with AI
| Genre | The promise | The engine | It ends on | With AI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenge | The person who humiliated her is exposed in public. | A wrong built in public, a plan the viewer sees first, a payback with a price. | A name read aloud, a document, a door that opens. | Medium. Crowds and reaction shots add cast and cost; keep the room to five faces. |
| CEO romance | The cold boss softens for one person, and only she sees it. | Forced proximity, a rule, a jealous beat and a confession cut off. | A line that almost says it, a name on a contract, a rival at the door. | Easy. Interiors, two people, medium shots and short lines: the cheapest cast to keep consistent. |
| Hidden heir | The person they looked down on turns out to own the room. | Dramatic irony, a keepsake as proof, a reveal clock. | A keepsake recognized, a family name spoken, a car that stops at the door. | Medium. Needs a rich room and a plain room, and a keepsake shot that has to match every time. |
| Werewolf | The rejected mate returns stronger than the alpha who threw her away. | Rules of the pack, a bond, a rejection, a return. | Eyes turning gold, a howl from the trees, a mark on a wrist. | Hard. Night exteriors and transformations are the hardest shots to keep steady; show eyes, shadows and sound first. |
| Mafia | The one person who cannot be scared walks in, and the most feared man pays attention. | Menace without violence, a debt, an oath and a betrayal. | A pen slid across a table, a phone that rings, a door locked from outside. | Medium. Mostly interiors and cars, but night streets and groups of men raise the number of faces. |
| Second chance | The two people who should have stayed together get another try. | The thing that went wrong, a room they cannot leave and a clock. | An old keychain, a ring box, a name on a guest list. | Easy. Two people and one place carry a whole episode. |
| Contract marriage | A fake marriage with rules turns real, one broken rule at a time. | A contract that writes the plot and rules that get broken. | A clause read aloud, a signature, an unexpected guest. | Easy. Two leads, a few rooms and a paper prop; the contract does the plotting for you. |
| Billionaire romance | The richest man in the room picks her, in front of everyone who laughed. | Class contrast, a public rescue and a grand gesture. | A hand held out in a silent room, a car door opened, a job offer at eight. | Easy. A gala is a crowd, so frame it tight: two leads, one hostile face and a few background guests. |

Wikipedia names three of them first
Wikipedia lists romance, especially stories with billionaire or CEO characters, revenge narratives and identity-reveal plots among the most popular genres, names organized crime and wealth and status among the common themes, and says American viewers gravitate to romance, CEO storylines and revenge. Those map onto five of the eight genres here: CEO romance and billionaire romance, revenge, hidden heir (the identity reveal) and mafia. Werewolf, second chance and contract marriage are three more story engines, and they travel well because each one is a single sentence.
How to choose a genre
- Start from the viewer's wish. Revenge sells justice. CEO and billionaire romances sell being chosen. Hidden heir sells being recognized. Second chance sells getting it back. If you cannot say the wish in six words, the genre is wrong for the idea.
- Count your faces and places. A genre that lives in two people and one room is the cheapest to keep consistent. A genre with crowds, galas or night forests needs more character sheets and more careful shots.
- Pick the last shot before the first. Each genre has cliffhangers that suit it: a name read aloud, an old keychain, a pen slid across a table. If you cannot see your last shot, you do not have an episode yet. How to write the cliffhanger.
- Mix two, not four. The strongest series stack two engines: contract marriage with a CEO, hidden heir with revenge, mafia with a second chance. More than two and the viewer cannot say what the show is.
What every genre needs
Under the costumes the engines are the same, and it is worth checking your idea against them before you generate anything:
- A wrong or a secret in the first ten seconds. A slap, an insult, a locked door, a name no one should know.
- Dramatic irony. The viewer knows something the characters do not.
- A clear antagonist who does something specific. Not a mood: an act the viewer wants answered.
- One payoff per episode. A small win before the big one.
- A turn every twenty to thirty seconds and a cliffhanger at the peak.

Frequently asked questions
What are the most popular micro drama genres?
Wikipedia lists romance with billionaire or CEO characters, revenge narratives and identity-reveal plots among the most popular genres, names organized crime as a common theme, and says American viewers gravitate to romance, CEO storylines and revenge. The Ziztu guides add werewolf and fated mates, second chance and contract marriage.
Which micro drama genre is easiest to make with AI?
CEO romance, contract marriage and second chance, because they live in two people and a few rooms with medium shots and short lines. Werewolf is the hardest, because night forests and transformations are the shots AI video keeps least steady.
What is a micro drama trope?
A trope is a story device the viewer already knows and wants again: the hidden heir, the contract marriage, the rejected mate, the public payback. A genre is built from a few tropes that fit together.
Can I mix genres in one micro drama?
Yes, and the best series usually do. Pair two engines, such as contract marriage with a CEO or hidden heir with revenge, and keep the promise to one sentence.
