Anime Rain Scenes
Waiting out a storm, rain on a classroom window, a crossing of umbrellas, one umbrella for two and a run through a downpour: five rain shots and how they are drawn.

How anime draws rain
Anime rain is drawn, not simulated. It is usually thin straight streaks at one angle, layered in two or three depths: a few long, bright streaks close to the camera and many short, faint ones far away. Splashes on the ground, rings in puddles and a gray-blue palette do the rest. Heavy rain often gets a white haze that softens the background.
Rain is almost always about a feeling: someone left out in it, two people under one umbrella, a window between a character and the world. The camera often watches from inside, through glass, or from far away.
Five shots, broken down
Every frame below was made for this page with Meta Muse Image from the prompt under it. The notes use storyboard terms: where the camera stands and how high, what the frame holds, where the light comes from, and what should move when you animate it.
Shot 1: Waiting out the storm

- Camera
- Eye level across the road from a bus shelter, about seven meters away.
- Lens
- Normal, a 40 mm feel.
- Framing
- The lit shelter in the right third, a girl alone on the bench, heavy rain across the whole frame.
- Light
- One fluorescent tube in the shelter, cool white; the rest of the frame gray-blue.
- Palette
- #374959#23323E#5A6D7D#14212B#08121A
- Motion
- Rain pours, the light flickers, headlights sweep across the road.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Eye level from across a country road at night, about seven meters from a small bus shelter in the right third of the frame. A girl in a school uniform sits alone on its bench, holding her bag on her knees, looking down the road, not at the camera. Heavy rain falls in thin straight streaks across the whole frame and splashes on the road. A single fluorescent light inside the shelter, cool white; everything else gray-blue, dark trees behind. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

Shot 2: Rain on the classroom window

- Camera
- Close to a classroom window, from inside, at desk height.
- Lens
- Long, a 100 mm feel: the drops are sharp, the yard behind is soft.
- Framing
- Drops and runnels on the glass filling the frame, a blurred schoolyard and a figure with a red umbrella behind.
- Light
- Flat gray daylight outside; a cool sheen on the glass.
- Palette
- #84949E#99A9B3#6D7F85#4F616A#B2C3CD
- Motion
- Drops slide down and merge, the red umbrella crosses the yard.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. An insert shot from inside a classroom, close to a window at desk height. Rain drops and running streams of water on the glass fill the frame in sharp focus. Behind the glass, a soft blurred schoolyard in gray rain and one small figure with a red umbrella crossing it. Flat gray daylight, a cool sheen on the glass. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

Shot 3: A crossing of umbrellas

- Camera
- Overhead, straight down from about ten meters above a crossing.
- Lens
- Normal, a 35 mm feel.
- Framing
- A field of dark umbrellas filling the frame, one yellow umbrella in the left third moving against the flow.
- Light
- Even rainy light; wet zebra stripes shining between the umbrellas.
- Palette
- #333A4A#1C2129#515766#D3DCDE#737882
- Motion
- The umbrellas flow across; the yellow one moves the other way.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Overhead shot looking straight down from about ten meters above a city crossing in the rain. Dozens of umbrellas in navy, black and gray fill the frame as people cross, with wet white zebra stripes shining between them. One bright yellow umbrella in the left third moves against the flow. Even gray rainy light, rain streaks and splashes on the asphalt. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

Shot 5: Running through a downpour

- Camera
- Very low, at ankle height, as a runner splashes past.
- Lens
- Wide, a 20 mm feel.
- Framing
- A foot landing in a puddle in the left foreground, the runner cut off by the top of the frame, a long wet street behind.

How to make an anime rain scene with AI
- Describe the rain as drawing. "Thin straight streaks at one angle, layered near and far, splashes on the ground" gets the anime look. "Rain" alone often gives photo-like blur.
- Give the rain a light to show against. Rain only shows against something bright: a lit window, headlights, a pale sky at the end of a street. Put one in the frame.
- Pick a side of the glass. Inside looking out feels safe and lonely; outside in the rain feels exposed. Decide before you write the camera line.
- Use one bright color. A yellow umbrella or a red coat in a gray frame gives the eye somewhere to go.
- Let the video model do the falling. In image to video, ask for the rain to keep falling, puddles to ripple and drops to run down the glass. Keep camera moves small.

Frequently asked questions
How do you draw anime rain?
With thin straight lines at one angle, in two or three layers: a few long, bright streaks close to the camera and many short, faint ones far away. Add rings in puddles and small splashes on hard surfaces, and keep the palette gray-blue with one warm light.
Why is it always raining in sad anime scenes?
Rain cuts the world down to a small space, hides faces under umbrellas and gives characters a reason to stay still or to share shelter. It shows a mood without a single line of dialogue.
Can AI animate rain?
Yes, rain is one of the things image to video does well. Start from a frame that already shows streaks and splashes, and ask for the rain to keep falling, puddles to ripple and drops to run down the glass.
What colors work for an anime rain scene?
Gray-blues and slate for the world, white for the rain streaks and spray, and one warm accent: a lit window, a yellow umbrella or a red coat. Each frame above lists its palette.
What is the shared umbrella scene in anime?
Two characters walking under one umbrella, a classic sign of closeness. The small detail that sells it is the umbrella leaning toward one of them while the other gets wet.
