Anime Sky
Tall summer clouds, a sky full of stars, a storm front, a puddle and a sea of clouds: five sky shots with the camera, light and palette written out.

Why anime skies look the way they do
In anime the sky is often the biggest thing in the frame. Background artists paint it like a character: towering clouds in a summer story, a thin band of dusk over a city, a sky full of stars when two people finally talk. The clouds are painted rather than simulated, so they have hard, sculpted edges, a bright lit side and a soft blue shadow side.
Three choices make or break a sky shot: how much of the frame is sky (two thirds or more reads as freedom or loneliness), where the horizon sits (low for scale, high when the ground matters), and where the sun is. Sun behind the clouds gives glowing rims; sun behind the camera lights the cloud faces and flattens them.
Five shots, broken down
Every frame below was made for this page with Meta Muse Image from the prompt under it. The notes use storyboard terms: where the camera stands and how high, what the frame holds, where the light comes from, and what should move when you animate it.
Shot 1: Summer clouds over a hill

- Camera
- Low, about a meter above the grass, facing up the hill with a slight upward tilt.
- Lens
- Wide, a 24 mm feel: the clouds tower and the ground falls away.
- Framing
- Horizon on the lower fifth, a lone figure small on the ridge in the right third, the cloud stack filling the left two thirds.
- Light
- Midday sun high and to the left of the camera. Cloud tops lit white, undersides cool blue-gray.
- Palette
- #27462B#18539F#6F91BA#719959#E7EDF0
- Motion
- Clouds roll slowly to the right, the grass ripples toward the figure, her shirt flutters.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Wide shot from low in the grass looking slightly up a green hill. Huge white summer cumulus clouds tower over the hill and fill most of the frame, with hard sculpted edges, bright tops and soft blue shadow sides. A small teenage girl in a white shirt stands on the ridge in the right third, seen from behind, looking up at the clouds. The horizon sits low. Midday sun from the upper left, deep saturated blue sky. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

The clouds roll slowly to the right and swell, the grass ripples in waves toward the girl, and her shirt and hair flutter in the wind.
Save the frame, upload it to image to video and paste this. Pick the camera move "slow push in".
Shot 2: A sky full of stars

- Camera
- On a flat rooftop, two meters behind two people sitting, at their shoulder height, tilted up about 30 degrees.
- Lens
- Normal to wide, a 35 mm feel: the stars spread across the frame without stretching the people.
- Framing
- The two silhouettes in the bottom third, left of center; the Milky Way crossing diagonally from lower right to upper left.
- Light
- No key light. The people are dark against the glow of the sky; a faint warm town glow on the horizon.
- Palette
- #1F196C#373784#51549E#18193B#717CBB
- Motion
- Stars twinkle, one shooting star crosses the upper left, one of them points.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Two teenagers sit side by side on a flat rooftop at night, seen from behind at shoulder height, small in the bottom third of the frame, left of center. Above them a deep night sky full of stars, the band of the Milky Way crossing diagonally, deep indigo and violet with tiny white and pale blue stars. A faint warm orange glow of a town on the far horizon. They are dark silhouettes looking up at the sky. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.
The exact words this frame was made from with Meta Muse Image. Paste them into an anime image tool and change the details.
Stars twinkle softly, a single shooting star crosses the upper left of the sky, and one of the two lifts an arm to point at it.
Save the frame, upload it to image to video and paste this. Pick the camera move "static camera".
Shot 3: A storm front rolling in

- Camera
- Eye level on a coastal road, eight meters behind a cyclist, facing the sea.
- Lens
- Long, an 85 mm feel: the storm wall looks close and heavy behind the small rider.
- Framing
- The road leads from the bottom center to the horizon, the cyclist small in the middle third, the cloud wall taking the top half.
- Light
- Sun behind the camera still lights the road and the rider gold; the storm ahead is slate blue.
- Palette
- #3B4B66#556F8E#EEC984#8694A5#283136
- Motion
- The cloud wall churns and slides closer, lightning flashes inside it, the rider pedals harder.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Eye level on an empty coastal road, the camera eight meters behind a teenage boy on a bicycle riding away toward the sea. A huge dark storm front fills the top half of the sky, a wall of slate blue clouds with a bright upper edge and curtains of rain hanging below it over the water. Behind the camera the sun still shines, so the road and the boy are lit warm gold. Strong contrast between the warm road and the cold storm. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.
The exact words this frame was made from with Meta Muse Image. Paste them into an anime image tool and change the details.
The storm clouds churn and slide closer, a flash of lightning glows inside the cloud wall, and the boy stands on the pedals and rides faster.
Save the frame, upload it to image to video and paste this. Pick the camera move "static camera".
Shot 4: The sky in a puddle

- Camera
- At ground level, a few centimeters above a rain puddle, looking down at about 45 degrees.
- Lens
- Wide, a 28 mm feel, so the puddle and its reflection fill the frame.
- Framing
- The reflected clouds fill most of the frame; a sneaker toe enters from the lower right corner; no face in frame.
- Light
- The sky clearing after rain. The reflection is brighter than the wet asphalt around it.
- Palette
- #10131A#313655#5F97C8#D3E0E3#A2BBD4
- Motion
- The sneaker steps in and ripples break the reflected clouds.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. An insert shot from ground level looking down into a rain puddle on dark asphalt after a storm. The puddle reflects a bright blue sky with white clouds breaking apart. The toe of a white sneaker is about to step in from the lower right corner. No face in frame. Wet asphalt dark and glossy around the bright reflection. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.
The exact words this frame was made from with Meta Muse Image. Paste them into an anime image tool and change the details.
The sneaker steps into the puddle, rings of ripples spread out and break up the reflected clouds, then the water settles again.
Save the frame, upload it to image to video and paste this. Pick the camera move "static camera".
Shot 5: Above a sea of clouds

- Camera
- High on a rocky ridge, behind and above a hiker, looking out over a sea of clouds.
- Lens
- Wide, a 24 mm feel.
- Framing
- Horizon on the upper third, the cloud sea filling the middle, the hiker small in the lower left third, facing the sun.
- Light
- Sun just above the horizon ahead of the camera: strong backlight, gold rims on the cloud tops and on the hiker.
- Palette
- #302C2B#767E8B#96A0AC#F1D3A0#C7BFB4
- Motion
- The cloud sea flows between the peaks, the scarf lifts, the sun climbs a little.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Wide shot from high on a rocky mountain ridge, the camera behind and above a young woman hiker with a backpack and a long red scarf standing small in the lower left of the frame. Below her a sea of white clouds flows between dark mountain peaks. The sun is just above the horizon straight ahead, so everything is backlit, with gold rims on the cloud tops and around her outline. The sky fades from pale gold to clear blue. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.
The exact words this frame was made from with Meta Muse Image. Paste them into an anime image tool and change the details.
The sea of clouds flows slowly between the peaks, her red scarf lifts in the wind, and the sun climbs a little higher.
Save the frame, upload it to image to video and paste this. Pick the camera move "slow pan to the right".
How to make an anime sky with AI
- Give the clouds a shape and a size. "Towering summer cumulus with hard sculpted edges" beats "beautiful clouds". Anime clouds have a bright lit side and a blue shadow side; ask for both.
- Place the horizon. A low horizon gives a big sky and a small person. A high horizon puts the story on the ground.
- Say where the sun is relative to the camera. Sun ahead of the camera gives rims and silhouettes. Sun behind the camera lights the cloud faces.
- Keep people small and turned away. A figure seen from behind invites the viewer into the sky. A face looking at the lens turns the frame into a poster.
- Animate the slow things. Drifting clouds, grass, hair and scarves are what image to video does best. Ask for one camera move at most.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make an anime sky?
Start with a deep blue at the top that pales toward the horizon, then add large clouds with hard edges and two tones: a bright lit side and a soft blue shadow side. With AI, write that in words, say where the sun is, and keep one small figure in the frame for scale. The prompts on this page are a starting point.
What colors are used for an anime sky?
A summer anime sky usually runs from a saturated cobalt at the top to a pale cyan near the horizon, with white clouds shaded in blue-gray or lavender. Dusk adds peach, coral and violet. The palette under each frame lists the exact colors pulled from the picture.
Why do anime clouds look so solid?
Background painters shape cumulus clouds like sculptures: clear outlines, flat planes of light and shadow and very little texture. They read at a glance and stay calm while characters move in front of them.
How do I animate an anime sky?
Save the frame, upload it to image to video and describe slow motion: clouds drifting, light shifting, grass and hair moving. Pick a slow push in or a slow pan. The video prompt under each frame is written that way.
Can I make a night sky full of stars?
Yes. Ask for a deep indigo sky with tiny white and pale blue stars, the band of the Milky Way crossing diagonally, and the people as dark silhouettes. A faint warm glow on the horizon keeps the frame from looking empty.
