AI vs Filmed Micro Drama
An AI micro drama costs far less to produce than a filmed one because there is no cast, crew or set, but it is not free and it is not the same thing. Here is the cost, time and quality side by side, with Ziztu's list prices and sourced budgets for filmed series.

The AI side, in real frames

Four frames of The Wrong Wedding, made with AI in Ziztu: 32 seconds in seven shots, with no actors, crew or set. Its clips cost 320 credits at list price, about $3.84 on Starter. The table below puts that kind of price next to filmed budgets, and says what it leaves out.
The cost, side by side
What a micro drama series costs, by how it is made
| How it is made | What the number covers | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filmed, United States | A 7 to 10 day shoot producing 50 to 70 or more episodes: cast, crew, locations, edit | $150,000 to $250,000 | Wikipedia, read 15 Oct 2026 |
| Filmed, China | Some successful productions, as a low end | As little as $50,000 | Wikipedia, read 15 Oct 2026 |
| AI, a professional studio | An hour of finished content, as told to TheWrap by Dashverse, against $150,000 budgets for live-action vertical series | About $20,000 to $30,000 an hour | TheWrap, 11 Jun 2026 |
| AI in Ziztu, 60 episodes of about 90 seconds, 480p | The clips only, at list price: 33,000 credits on Starter rates | About $396.00 | Ziztu rate card |
| AI in Ziztu, 60 episodes of about 90 seconds, 768p | The clips only, at list price: 52,800 credits on Starter rates | About $633.60 | Ziztu rate card |
These rows are not like for like. A filmed budget pays for people, places and a crew. The Ziztu rows price only the video clips of a 60-episode series of 22 shots of 4 seconds (88 seconds an episode); they leave out retakes, voices, music, first frames, your time and a plan that is big enough for that many credits.
Retakes decide the real price
No tool can promise how many shots you will redo, because it depends on the story, the cast and how picky you are. So plan with a multiple of the list price and measure yours on the first episode:
The clips of the 60 episode series if you keep one take in N
| Takes generated per shot kept | Credits at 768P | About |
|---|---|---|
| One (no retakes) | 52,800 | $633.60 |
| 1.5 | 79,200 | $950.40 |
| 2 | 105,600 | $1,267.20 |
| 3 | 158,400 | $1,900.80 |
Even at three takes for every shot you keep, the clips of a 60 episode series of 88 minutes come to about $1,900.80 at list price, against the $50,000 to $250,000 the filmed budgets above describe. The gap is real. It is also a gap in what you get: no actors' performances, no location, and a look that is generated, not photographed.
Time
TheWrap reported in June 2026 that Dashverse and StoReel, two AI studios with teams, spend 10 days to a month on scripting and a month on production. A single creator on Ziztu works at a smaller scale: The Wrong Wedding came from one sentence, and most clips finish in about a minute or two, so a 22-shot episode is an afternoon of generating and reviewing, not a shoot. The time you spend is on the writing and the review. Write tight, plan the shots first and the review is short.
Quality: what AI does well and what still needs a human
What to expect
| AI micro drama | Filmed micro drama | |
|---|---|---|
| The same face in every shot | Yes with character sheets; a hard shot can drift and needs a retake | Yes, it is the same actor |
| Acting | Good faces and reactions in short shots; long speeches and lip sync are not perfect | Real performance, including long scenes |
| Crowds and action | Hard: keep to a few faces; stunts and fights are risky | Possible with a budget and a stunt crew |
| Places | Any place you can describe, but each needs a reference to stay the same | A real location, or a built set |
| Speed of a change | Retake one shot in minutes | A reshoot |
| Rights | Invented characters only; you must label realistic AI video on most platforms | Casting releases, locations, music licenses |
| Where it can run | YouTube, TikTok and Instagram with the AI label on; apps set their own rules | Everywhere, including apps that buy filmed series |
The honest summary: an AI micro drama is the cheapest way to find out whether a story grips, and a good one for a series you publish yourself. A filmed series is still the safer path for acting-heavy stories and for sales to apps that buy filmed work. Many creators will do both: make the AI episode first and film only what works.
Which one to choose
- Choose AI when you are testing a story, publishing on your own channel, working alone or on a small budget, or making a genre of rooms, faces and short lines such as a CEO romance.
- Choose a shoot when the story depends on performance over long takes, on a crowd, on a real place or on a fight, or when the buyer you want only takes filmed work.
- Do both when you want to prove the story first: make episode 1 with AI, see whether it holds an audience, then decide what to film.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI micro drama cost to make?
At list price an 88 second episode of 22 shots of 4 seconds costs 880 credits at 768P, about $10.56 on Starter, for the clips only. Retakes, voices, music and first frames are extra, and Ziztu shows the price of every clip before you generate it.
How much does a filmed micro drama cost?
Wikipedia reports that US productions typically cost $150,000 to $250,000 for a 7 to 10 day shoot producing 50 to 70 or more episodes, and that some successful Chinese productions cost as little as $50,000.
Is an AI micro drama cheaper than a filmed one?
Yes, by a wide margin, because there is no cast, crew or set. The AI price is for video clips only and you will redo some shots, so plan with two or three takes per shot. The two are not like for like: a filmed series pays for actors, places and a crew.
How long does it take to make an AI micro drama?
A single creator can plan and generate a short episode in an afternoon. Most clips finish in one to two minutes, and the rest of the time is writing and reviewing. Dashverse and StoReel told TheWrap that they spend 10 days to a month on scripting and a month on production.
Do AI micro dramas look real?
Faces and short reactions can look very real. Long speeches, lip sync, crowds and two people touching are the weak spots. Plan short lines, medium shots and a small cast, and retake the one shot that drifts.
Can I sell an AI micro drama to an app?
Each app sets its own rules for what it accepts and how it labels AI content, so check the app's own creator or partner page. Ziztu does not submit to apps for you. You can post to YouTube, TikTok and Instagram yourself with the AI label on.
