MHA OC archetype guide

My Hero Academia has a wide cast from traditional shounen heroes to complex villains. These 13 archetypes cover the full range of roles in the MHA world.

  • The All-Rounder - a balanced Quirk with high versatility, adapts to any situation and leads from the front.
  • The Tank - built to absorb damage and protect others, often underestimated in terms of strategic value.
  • The Speed Demon - fastest in the class, wins through overwhelming initiative before opponents can react.
  • The Strategist - low-powered Quirk but extraordinary tactical mind, always three moves ahead.
  • The Support Hero - Quirk enhances allies rather than attacking, the backbone of any team fight.
  • The Dark Horse - an unusual or seemingly weak Quirk with extraordinary hidden applications.
  • The Prodigy - naturally gifted, Quirk came in strong, has to learn that effort and teamwork matter.
  • The Late Bloomer - Quirk developed slowly or unusually, has a different relationship with power than peers.
  • The Underdog - conventional metrics say they should not be here, but they keep proving the metrics wrong.
  • The Muscle Hero - raw power is the Quirk, no tricks, wins through overwhelming physical force.
  • The Long-Range Specialist - controls engagements from distance, becomes dangerous when forced into close quarters.
  • The Villain-Turned-Hero - carries a past they are still working through, loyal to their own code first.
  • The Idealist - wants to change the hero system from within, asks hard questions about what heroism really means.

MHA design rules: building a hero costume that makes sense

Hero costumes in My Hero Academia are designed around the Quirk. Your OC's design should reflect how their power works, how it looks in use and what it costs them physically. Here are the key principles:

  • Costume mirrors Quirk function: a fire emitter needs heat-resistant materials and open hands. An ice user might have insulated boots and layered fabrics. A transformation-type needs flexible or tear-away sections. Design decisions should have an in-world reason.
  • Color codes communicate alignment: heroes tend toward bright, readable palettes that make them visible and inspiring. Villains often use dark, muted or unsettling colors. Underground heroes use low-visibility schemes. Your OC's palette is a signal.
  • Support items and accessories: items like capture tape, communicators, specialized boots or wrist devices add visual interest and story hooks. What does your OC's agency or support tech company issue them?
  • Expressive faces with big emotions: MHA is a shounen series with dramatic emotional beats. Your OC should have an expressive face capable of capturing determination, doubt, rage and relief.
  • Agency logos and emblems: many pro heroes have a logo or motif that appears on their costume. Design a simple, distinctive symbol for your OC that could work as a chest emblem or cape insignia.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my MHA OC in a fan game?

Yes, for non-commercial fan projects. Fan games are a long-standing part of the MHA community. Use original assets and include a disclaimer that the work is unofficial and not affiliated with Kohei Horikoshi or Shueisha.

Can I use my MHA OC in fan comics?

Yes. Fan doujinshi and webcomics are a major part of the MHA fandom. Keep the work non-commercial, label it as fan-made and avoid reusing official art assets.

Can my OC be in the same class as the canon characters?

In fan fiction, yes. Many popular MHA fan works place an OC in Class 1-A or 1-B alongside the canon cast. It is a useful narrative device because the existing characters provide built-in conflict and camaraderie.

Does my OC need a Quirk?

No. The Quirkless are a part of the MHA world and carry their own story weight. A Quirkless OC who succeeds through tactical skill, support tech or sheer determination is a compelling premise.

Can I animate my MHA OC?

Yes. Use the Animate button after generating to take your character into Ziztu Studio and create an action clip, a costume reveal or a short training scene.
