Attack on Titan OC archetype guide

Attack on Titan characters carry the weight of a world where survival is not guaranteed and every ideology costs someone something. These 12 archetypes capture the range of roles in the AOT world.

  • The Idealistic Recruit - joined the Survey Corps believing in freedom, has not yet learned what that word actually costs.
  • The Battle-Hardened Captain - has outlived every squad they ever led, functions through discipline rather than feeling.
  • The Calculating Commander - makes decisions with more information than they share, accepts that some losses are acceptable.
  • The Tormented Shifter - carries the weight of what their Titan form has done, cannot separate themselves from it.
  • The Loyal Comrade - would follow their squad to any outcome, their strength comes entirely from that commitment.
  • The Disillusioned Soldier - has stopped believing in the mission but has nowhere else to go and people to protect.
  • The Hidden Noble - comes from a family with more connections to the truth than they have revealed.
  • The Unlikely Hero - nothing in their background suggested they would matter, and yet here they are.
  • The Ruthless Strategist - will not mourn what the plan requires, pays for that efficiency in other ways.
  • The Broken Veteran - has survived so many things they should not have that existing feels like an accident.
  • The Devoted Protector - has attached their sense of purpose entirely to one person, dangerous when that purpose is threatened.
  • The Truth Seeker - suspects the walls hide more than just Titans, and is correct about that in ways they have not imagined yet.

Attack on Titan design rules: military uniforms and the weight of the world

AOT has a gritty, grounded military aesthetic that carries emotional weight in every design choice. Here are the key principles:

  • Branch uniforms as identity: the branch uniform is the primary visual identifier. Survey Corps wears brown jackets and trousers with the Wings of Freedom emblem. Garrison wears red and brown. Military Police wears white. The ODM (omni-directional movement) gear is standard across all branches and should be present for any active soldier.
  • Desaturated, worn palettes: AOT uses muted, earthy colors: dark greens, browns, greys and khaki. Bright or saturated colors stand out immediately as unusual. Dirt, bloodstains and damage are part of the visual language for anyone who has been in the field.
  • Practical silhouettes: uniform design is functional rather than decorative. Straps, buckles and holsters for ODM gear create a layered but practical look. Characters in formal or civilian dress feel different because that practicality disappears.
  • Titan forms and horror: Titan designs in AOT range from the unsettling to the genuinely terrifying. They have abnormal proportions, blank expressions and wrong-feeling skin. If your OC is a Shifter, their Titan form should contrast sharply with their human design.
  • Faces that carry history: AOT characters are defined by what has happened to them. Scars, dark circles, hollow expressions and thousand-yard stares are common. Even young characters carry something behind their eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my AOT OC in a fan game?

Yes, for non-commercial fan projects. Include a disclaimer that the work is unofficial and not affiliated with Hajime Isayama or Kodansha.

Can I use my AOT OC in fan fiction?

Yes. AOT fan fiction is large and active on Archive of Our Own and similar sites. Keep the work non-commercial and label it fan-made.

Can my OC be a Titan Shifter?

Yes. Titan Shifters are a popular choice for fan OCs. Consider which of the nine Titans fits the character concept, and what the inheritance of that power has cost them.

Does my OC need to be Eldian?

No. The AOT world has Marleyans, Hizurans and other groups. A Marleyan soldier with conflicted loyalties, or an outsider drawn into the conflict, opens different story angles than a Paradis Islander.

Can I animate my AOT OC?

Yes. Use the Animate button after generating to take your character into Ziztu Studio and create an ODM maneuver sequence or a Titan transformation scene.
