Warrior Cats OC archetype guide
Warrior Cats has a rich cast built around loyalty, ambition and the tension between duty and personal desire. These 13 archetypes capture the range of roles in the Clans.
- The Brave Apprentice - newly named, eager to prove themselves in battle and earn their warrior name.
- The Wise Medicine Cat - keeper of healing knowledge and StarClan connections, caught between tradition and new ideas.
- The Grizzled Elder - retired from fighting, full of stories and warnings the younger cats rarely heed in time.
- The Ambitious Deputy - one step from leadership, managing the weight of responsibility and the temptation of power.
- The Loyal Warrior - follows the Warrior Code absolutely, finds meaning in service and struggles when the Code seems wrong.
- The Rogue Loner - no Clan, no rules, no allies by choice, has good reasons for every one of those decisions.
- The Curious Kit - too young for battle, too energetic to stay in camp, always finding trouble beyond the border.
- The Battle-Scarred Leader - has used several of their nine lives, leads with hard-won wisdom and visible wounds.
- The Peacemaker - sees the value in every Clan, tries to prevent conflict before it starts, often dismissed as naive.
- The Mysterious Outsider - joined the Clan from elsewhere, carries secrets from before, earns trust slowly.
- The Fierce Protector - first into any fight that threatens the Clan, protective to the point of recklessness.
- The Clever Strategist - wins through positioning and patience rather than strength, the tactical mind of the patrol.
- The Medicine Cat Torn - loves someone they cannot be with by the Medicine Cat code, navigates duty and feeling.
Warrior Cats design rules: Clan colors and markings
Each Clan has a visual identity shaped by its territory and culture. Use these principles to build a cat that reads as authentically Clan.
- ThunderClan (forest territory): warm colors including orange, brown, ginger and golden tabby. Thicker builds suited to forest cover. Amber and green eyes are most common.
- ShadowClan (dark pine forest): dark pelts in grey, black and dark tabby patterns. Narrower, leaner builds. Pale yellow or eerie pale grey eyes. A slightly unsettling quality is appropriate.
- WindClan (moorland): lighter, faster bodies. Tawny, brown and cream pelts that blend with open grass. Yellow or pale amber eyes. Lean and long-legged.
- RiverClan (river territory): sleek, water-adapted coats. Silver tabby, grey and blue-grey pelts. Blue or pale grey eyes. A natural poise and elegance in posture.
- SkyClan (gorge territory): varied coloring with a slight emphasis on lighter tones. Known for strong hind legs for leaping. More varied eye and pelt combinations than the lake Clans.
- Name structure: Clan cats have names in two parts. The prefix often references a color or texture (Ash, Silver, Bright, Dark) or a natural feature (Stone, Leaf, Flame). The suffix changes by rank: kit, paw (apprentice) and a descriptor (heart, claw, pelt, leap, storm) for warriors.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Warrior Cats OC in a fan game?
Yes, for non-commercial fan projects. Warrior Cats fan games and fan simulators are a long-standing tradition. Use original art assets and include a disclaimer that the project is unofficial and not affiliated with Erin Hunter or the publishers.
Can I use my Warrior Cats OC in fan fiction?
Yes. Fan fiction is the heart of the Warrior Cats community. Sites like Wattpad and Archive of Our Own host thousands of Warrior Cats fan works. Keep the work non-commercial and label it fan-made.
How do I come up with a good Warrior Cats name?
Start with a prefix that describes a physical trait or color (Ash, Silver, Ginger, Swift) or a natural feature (Stone, Leaf, Flame). For the warrior suffix, pick something that reflects the character: -heart for loyalty, -claw for strength, -pelt for a notable coat, -storm for a fierce fighter.
Can my OC be from StarClan?
Yes. StarClan ancestors are a core part of the Warrior Cats universe. An OC from StarClan might be a mentor spirit, a cat whose story was unfinished or a figure of ancient wisdom. Their visual design often includes a starry or faintly glowing quality.
Can I animate my Warrior Cats OC?
Yes. Use the Animate button after generating to bring your cat character into Ziztu Studio for a short clip: a patrol scene, a leap, or a StarClan vision sequence.
