Anime Explosions
A fireball with a white core, a dust dome in a canyon, an energy blast, a shockwave over a city and the smoke after: how anime draws explosions as shapes.
Updated
Anime explosions are designed, not simulated
An anime explosion is a drawing of an explosion: flat, layered shapes of fire with a white-hot core, an orange body and a dark red edge, then smoke drawn as round, shaded puffs. Effects animators design the shapes and the timing, so a blast reads in a handful of frames and the smoke rolls in clear, countable lumps.
For stills and AI clips, the best explosions have a scale reference (a figure, a truck, a canyon wall), a light that falls on everything around them, and room in the frame for the cloud to grow.
Five shots, broken down
Every frame below was made for this page with Meta Muse Image from the prompt under it. The notes use storyboard terms: where the camera stands and how high, what the frame holds, where the light comes from, and what should move when you animate it.
Shot 1: A fireball with a white core

- Camera
- Eye level across a desert quarry, at a medium distance.
- Lens
- Normal, a 35 mm feel.
- Framing
- The fireball in the center right, a parked excavator in the left third for scale, rocks in the air.
- Light
- White core, orange body, dark red rim; the quarry walls lit orange, shadows thrown toward the camera.
- Palette
- #2A1D2A#5E4650#C87F59#555E95#F97008
- Motion
- The fireball swells and rolls into smoke, rocks fall, a ring of dust spreads across the quarry floor.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Eye level across a wide desert quarry at dusk. A huge ball of fire rises from the quarry floor in the center right of the frame, drawn as flat layered shapes: a white-hot core, a bright orange body and a dark red edge, with round puffs of black smoke starting to roll up from the top. A parked yellow excavator stands in the left third for scale. Small rocks hang in the air. The fire lights the quarry walls orange and throws long shadows toward the camera. No people. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

Shot 2: A dust dome in the canyon

- Camera
- High, from the canyon rim, far away.
- Lens
- Long, a 135 mm feel.
- Framing
- The canyon running into the distance, a dome of dust rising from its floor in the center, the walls on both sides.
- Light
- Midday sun from the upper left; the dome tan on top, brown underneath.
- Palette
- #401C17#6F4134#B46D51#CEA07D#7DC0EF
- Motion
- The dome expands, a ring of dust runs along the floor, rocks rain down.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. High view from the rim of a deep desert canyon, far away. A huge dome of dust and rock rises from the canyon floor in the center of the frame after an impact, drawn as big round shaded puffs, bright tan on top and dark brown underneath, with a ring of dust running out along the floor. The red canyon walls frame both sides. Clear blue sky, midday sun from the upper left. No people. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

Shot 3: An energy blast

- Camera
- Low, three meters behind a fighter, looking past her at the blast.
- Lens
- Wide, a 24 mm feel.
- Framing
- Her back and raised arm in the left foreground, a sphere of energy in the center, cracks running toward us.
- Light
- Cold blue-white from the blast on her outline and the cracks; the sky darkened to violet.
- Palette
- #303E6C#0D1223#5072AF#75A3DA#A1CEF1
- Motion
- The sphere swells and pulses, rubble lifts, her coat whips back.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Low camera three meters behind a young woman with short silver hair and a black jacket, her back and raised right arm in the left foreground. In the center of the frame a sphere of blue-white energy bursts in a ruined plaza, drawn as flat glowing shapes with a white core and pale blue rings, with cracks running across the ground toward the camera. Rubble floats in the air. The blast lights her outline and the cracks cold blue, the sky darkened to violet. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

Shot 4: A shockwave over the city

- Camera
- Very far outside the city, from a hilltop.
- Lens
- Long, a 200 mm feel.
- Framing
- The skyline across the lower third, a flash on the horizon, a ring-shaped cloud spreading across the sky.
- Light
- The flash backlights the skyline; white and orange glow in a dusk blue sky.
- Palette
- #425E89#1F2530#718199#C8A08A#85654F
- Motion
- The ring expands, the clouds are pushed away, the city lights go out.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Very long shot from a hilltop far outside a city at dusk. The city skyline is a dark silhouette across the lower third of the frame. Far behind it a bright flash glows on the horizon, and a huge ring-shaped shockwave cloud spreads outward across the dusk blue sky, pushing the clouds away. The glow is white and orange at the center. No people. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.

Shot 5: The smoke after

- Camera
- Eye level, close to the ground, at the edge of the smoke.
- Lens
- Normal, a 40 mm feel.
- Framing
- Rolling gray smoke filling the right two thirds, a figure stepping out of it in the center left, embers drifting.
- Light
- Firelight glowing orange through the smoke from behind; bright embers.
- Palette
- #7E7670#5E5A57#151617#47413E#A06247
- Motion
- The smoke rolls forward, embers drift, the figure walks out to the left.
A single frame from a 2D anime film, 16:9. Eye level close to the ground at the edge of a wall of rolling gray smoke that fills the right two thirds of the frame, drawn as big round shaded puffs. A figure in a long coat steps out of the smoke in the center left, walking toward the left with the head down, not looking at the camera. Orange firelight glows through the smoke from behind, and glowing embers drift through the air. Hand-painted background, clean line art, flat cel shading with hard two-tone shadows. No text, no letters, no numbers, no words, no logos, no watermark, no signature.
The exact words this frame was made from with Meta Muse Image. Paste them into an anime image tool and change the details.

How to make an anime explosion with AI
- Describe the explosion as layers. "A white-hot core, an orange body, a dark red edge, round puffs of black smoke" gets the drawn look. "A huge explosion" gets a photo-like blast.
- Light the world with it. Say what the explosion lights up and which way the shadows fall. That is what makes it feel big.
- Add scale. A small figure, a truck, a canyon wall or a skyline next to the blast.
- Leave room to grow. Put the blast off center with sky above it, so the cloud has space in the video.
- Add flashes in the edit. White flash frames and screen shake belong in the edit, not in the prompt. Video models handle rolling smoke and falling debris better than the instant of the blast.
Make it move
Save any frame on this page, upload it to image to video and paste its video prompt for a 5 second clip. Or make your own first frame from the image prompt.

Frequently asked questions
How do you draw an anime explosion?
As flat layered shapes: a white or yellow core, an orange body and a dark red outer edge, then smoke as round, shaded lumps that roll upward. Effects animators keep the shapes simple so they read in a few frames.
What colors are anime explosions?
White and pale yellow at the core, saturated orange in the body, deep red at the edges, with black or dark gray smoke. Energy blasts swap the fire colors for white, cyan and blue. Each frame above lists its palette.
Can AI animate an explosion?
Yes, especially the part after the blast: the fireball swelling, smoke rolling, debris falling, dust rings spreading. Start from a frame where the explosion has just begun so the clip has room to grow.
How do I make an explosion look big?
Put something of known size next to it, light the surroundings with its glow, and frame it from far away with a long lens or from very low with a wide lens. A blast that fills the whole frame with nothing around it looks small.
What is an impact frame?
A frame or two of stark, often inverted or two-color drawing at the moment of a hit or a blast. It is added in the edit, between the shots, and gives the explosion its punch.
